Some of you may have heard that my sister and her family recently lost their Campbell River home in a devastating fire this month. They were out of province dealing with a personal crisis at the time the fire occurred, and fortunately, the children were at a sleepover. "It was called in by a neighbour who noticed smoke in the area and then we quickly started to get a number of 911 calls, smoke coming from the structure” Campbell River Fire Deputy Chief Thomas Doherty told CHEK News.

We asked David Robertson, Mortgage Specialist serving North Vancouver Island, to explain what Canadian residents need to know about the new mortgage rules implemented this month by the federal government.

"On October 3, the federal government announced a change to the eligibility rules for new government-backed insured mortgages.

Effective October 17, 2016, all insured homebuyers must qualify for mortgage insurance using an interest rate that is the greater of their contract mortgage rate or the Bank of Canada’s conventional five-year fixed posted rate.
